Introduction

In the context of the BEST (Biologische Evaluatie van STrandzones) project eleven beaches of the Belgian coast were sampled.

Stations

The samples were taken from end october/begin november 2002 and continued up to end october 2003, this to collect data of a full year time span. In total, eleven beaches were sampled (see table 1).

Methods and techniques

Specimens have been collected using fixative-less pitfalltraps. Traps were placed on the floodline (deposition zone of organic material), coded as 'vl', and in the embryonic dune (almost never flooded), coded as 'ed'. Traps were numbered 1-10. The traps were active for 24 hours. In the laboratory, the contents was emptied, treated with 'formol', and the collected specimens were preserved in ethanol 70%.

The Collembola specimens are mounted in a drop of Hoyer medium on standard object slides, and covered with a square cover glass of 18x18 mm. After drying for a week at room temperature, the cover glasses are 'ringed' with transparant nail polish to seal the Hoyer medium.

The identifications have been done with the help of Gisin (1960) and Fjellberg (2003). The nomenclature is based on Bellinger, Christiansen & Janssens (1996-2004).
