Checklist of the Collembola: Key to the species of Proctostephanus

This key is still under construction. Note that missing figures will be provided as soon as possible. Currently, the key is in the feasibility study phase to find out how to integrate in the checklist in a modular way a key that has been generated with DELTA.

Rationale

The rationale for taxa used and not used as well as subtaxonomic classification for some taxa is to be provided.

Key

Note that no distinction between subtaxa and taxa is made in the key.

1(0). Dens with 2-4 dorsal setae and with 1 or 2 ventroapical setae;
        furca less desarrollada; mucro not clearly separated from
        dens; mucrodens shorter then 2 times the inner edge of the
        unguis...................................................... 2
      Dens with at least 6 dorsal setae and with 3 or 4 ventroapical
        setae; furca desarrollada; mucro clearly separated from dens;

Differential diagnoses

cidi
Anal crown without central teeth. Anal crown with a single set of 7–12 teeth in the form of an estrella. Dens with 2–4 dorsal setae and with 1 or 2 ventroapical setae. Furca less desarrollada. Integumentary granulation fine, with only primary granules. Mucro not clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens shorter then 2 times the inner edge of the unguis.

dalii
Anal crown with two sets of teeth. Dens with at least 6 dorsal setae and with 3 or 4 ventroapical setae. Dens with 6 dorsal setae and 4 ventroapical setae. Furca desarrollada. Mucro clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens longer then 3 times the inner edge of the unguis.

madeirensis
Anal crown with a single set of teeth. Dens with at least 6 dorsal setae and with 3 or 4 ventroapical setae. Dens with 7–12 dorsal setae and 3 ventroapical setae. Furca desarrollada. Mucro clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens longer then 3 times the inner edge of the unguis.

provincialis
Anal crown without central teeth. Anal crown with two regular sets of 6–13 teeth cada una. Dens with 2–4 dorsal setae and with 1 or 2 ventroapical setae. Furca less desarrollada. Integumentary granulation fine, with only primary granules. Mucro not clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens shorter then 2 times the inner edge of the unguis.

sanctiaugustini
Anal crown with an irregular set of 9–10 teeth and 6–10 central teeth. Dens with 2–4 dorsal setae and with 1 or 2 ventroapical setae. Furca less desarrollada. Integumentary granulation fine, with only primary granules. Mucro not clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens shorter then 2 times the inner edge of the unguis.

stuckeni
Dens with 2–4 dorsal setae and with 1 or 2 ventroapical setae. Furca less desarrollada. Integumentary granulation coarse, with primary and secondary granules. Mucro not clearly separated from dens. Mucrodens shorter then 2 times the inner edge of the unguis.
