Checklist of the Collembola: History - 2000

Preface

This checklist has been prepared by Frans Janssens, member of the Royal Entomological Society of Antwerp, Belgium. The purpose of this check list is to resolve synonomy related problems. Typical example: given a taxon name, verify whether or not it is currently valid and if not what is then its currently valid name.

This list is updated regularly. Unfortunately, it still contains a lot of mistakes. :-(
Typical errors are a) duplication of the same species name in several genera, b) duplication of taxa at different rank (e.g., once listed at species rank and once more at subspecies rank), c) synonyms listed as valid taxa, c) incorrect spelling of the name of a taxon or author, d) incorrect publication date, e) incorrect revision authority.

Note that the species count is optimistic and includes problematic taxa such as unresolved homonyms, unresolved nomina nuda and undescribed species (e.g., 'sp.').

A high species/genus ratio might be an indication that it is about time to do a revision of the concerned group. Taken this into account, the following groups are candidate for revision:

Arrhopalitidae, currently revised by Douglas Zeppelini & Robert Vargovich;
Proisotominae;
Frieseinae;
Lepidocyrtinae; the revision of Lepidocyrtus s.l. of Yoshii & Yayuk (1989) has been only partly accepted up to subgenus level.

Thanks to a contribution of Dr Jean-François Ponge, we were able to release the fifth edition of the Nomina Collembola Belgica, currently with 162 species. This edition contains also drafts of the species distribution maps (UTM 10 x 10 km).

In cooperation with Dr Arne Fjellberg a dichotomous key and an experimental interactive key to the species of Agrenia has been provided.

Based on the 'Network contact sheets', kindly provided by Dr Ken Christiansen, a new entry 'Expertise' is forseen in the menu. This webpage is intented to provide help in locating and contacting an expert in a certain area of Collembola research.
